Time to start planting

Spring Garden Kickoff at Pi Farms

Spring is in the most immediate future, and today marked the exciting start of our garden at Pi Farms! With a functional and beautiful layout, I'm thrilled to glimpse what we've got going on this season.

The Layout

My garden consists of five rows, each stretching 50 feet long and about 4 feet wide, giving me plenty of space to work with. Right in the middle, I've planned a massive collection of flowers designed to attract bees and other pollinators. This central row will help ensure that the surrounding veggies thrive with the help of these essential garden friends.

The four outer rows will be dedicated to various vegetables, carefully planned to maximize space and productivity. I put together a handy cheat sheet to keep track of everything, which has been a lifesaver in ensuring I know exactly what’s going where.

What I’m Growing

So far, I’ve planned and started planting a variety of crops, including:

  • Filderkraut Cabbage

  • Kalibos Cabbage

  • Chinese White Celery

  • Violaceo Di Verona Cabbage alongside onions like Alisa Craig and Ishikura Onion

In the next few days, I'll be adding carrots, beets, and more onions, and later this spring, I'll be planting cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers to round out our garden.

Seeing the neat rows slowly come to life is already so rewarding, and I can't wait to get everything in the ground and watch it grow into the vision I have in my head.

Gardening Solo This Year

This gardening season feels slightly different because I'm doing it solo this year while my soldier is deployed. It's been a challenge but also a rewarding experience to take of everything myself. I keep reminding myself of the strength and resilience we've built over the years, and every plant I put in the ground feels like a step forward. If you’ve been following my journey, you’ll remember my earlier blog post about the yellow ribbons I’ve tied around the farm as a reminder of my soldier’s presence, even from afar. Those ribbons motivate me to keep pushing forward with our homestead dreams.

Beyond the Garden

The garden isn't the only thing getting some love this season! In the back, we've got grapes, blackberries, and fruit trees, all of which I hope will thrive this year. I've curated a lovely collection of roses, including two special bushes from my grandmother's house. They bring a sense of nostalgia and tradition to our homestead, making this space feel even more special.

Looking Forward

With so much potential in the ground and more planting ahead, I'm filled with anticipation. Watching everything grow, tending to each plant, and eventually harvesting our hard work is what makes homesteading so fulfilling.

Stay tuned for updates as our spring garden transforms into something truly amazing!
