Cinnamon Rabbit Kits Have Arrived! Heritage Breed Meat Rabbits on the Homestead
Spring has sprung here on the homestead, and with it comes a flurry of floppy ears and wiggly noses—we’re thrilled to announce several new litters of Cinnamon rabbits born right here under our watchful eyes.
If you’re unfamiliar with the breed, let me introduce you to one of our farm favorites. The Cinnamon rabbit is a rare heritage breed that was developed in the United States in the 1960s. Known for their beautiful rust-colored coats and gentle temperaments, they were created by crossing Chinchilla, New Zealand, Checkered Giant, and Californian breeds—making them excellent for meat and show. Their calm nature and strong genetics make them a joy to raise and a valuable addition to any homestead or breeding program.
Here, we raise our rabbits with intention and care, focusing on sustainable, humane meat production. Our does kindle in quiet, clean nesting areas with plenty of space, hay, and natural light. Kits are monitored daily, handled regularly for gentle socialization, and fed a high-quality, balanced diet that includes fresh greens from our garden and forage when available.
Why raise rabbits for meat? Besides the sustainability and efficiency of rabbits (they have a low carbon footprint and reproduce quickly), rabbit meat is a nutritional powerhouse. It’s high in protein, low in fat, and rich in B vitamins and essential minerals like iron and phosphorus. For families looking to eat clean and local, rabbit is an ideal choice—and it fits perfectly into a nutrient-dense, whole food lifestyle.
These little ones will be ready for new homes in 8 weeks. One of our favorite milestones with new litters is when the kits start popcorning! If you’ve never seen it, it’s pure joy—tiny bunnies hopping, twisting, and kicking their feet in the air as they explore their world. It’s a clear sign they’re healthy, happy, and full of playful energy. We caught a few of ours in action this week and couldn’t resist sharing the cuteness.
